Young Guns (1988)
Movie Review by: Brandon Young

Starring:

Emilio Sheen (Martin Estevez’s son; Charlie’s broham)

Kiefer Sutherland (Donald Sutherland’s son)

Richie Valens

“Wild Thing” Rick Vaughn (Martin Sheen’s son; Emilio’s broham)

A bunch of other guys that I don’t really care that much about including Jack Palance and Dermot Mulroney

Tom Cruise was in this too, but if you blink you’ll miss him

Director: Christopher Cain (He’s the adopted father of Clark from those Lois and Clark shows; not Lewis and Clark the explorers, ya big dummy)

Plot: A New Mexican rancher (well, he’s English also), John Tunstall (played by the same guy who plays Jor-El in Smallville), takes in young men to work on his ranch while teaching them to become more civilized. Sounds pretty gay to me, too. A rival rancher (that dickhead Jack Palance), Lawrence G. Murphy (sounds like a dickhead) has Tunstall shot. Unfortunately, the young men working the ranch can’t do anything about it legally because Murphy has the sheriff under his payroll. The young men include Billy the Kid (mad gun skillz and an attitude to match), Doc Scurlock (not Holliday like some believe; Val Kilmer will always be the only real Doc Holliday, except for maybe the actual real Doc Holliday; he’s also good with a gun and great with Asian ladies and a poet), Chavez (a mother father who can toss some knives), Dick Brewer (another gun slinger who will shoot you in the face if he has to), Dirty Steve Stephens (he’s just plain old dirty), Charley Bowdre (he’ll punch you in the face). Anyways, these guys decide to take matters into their own hands and actually get deputized by the sheriff even though he’s under Murphy’s payroll. He doesn’t like Murph Dog that much either. That guy’s a jerk. The young guns handle their bithniss and whoop some ass along the way.

Favorite Part: Dirty Steve Stephens is laughing at Billy the Kid at the dinner table shortly after Billy starts working at the farm. Billy wants to know what’s funny. Steve says he’s just hacking on him. Dick says he heard Billy killed a guy and wants to know why. Billy replies with, “He was hacking on me.” This was freaking great. It was a combination of comedy and seriousness that makes you want to see where this movie will be heading in the future.

Review: Great freakin’ movie. I’d rank it up there in the top three greatest modern day westerns of all modern day.

Recommendation: You should watch it. Regulators, Mount Up!!!
